Dear Paristourist,
for a single trip it's the cheapest way to take a "Billet Ile-de-France" for a journey "Versailles Rive Gauche" to "Paris". With this ticket, you can get with RER C from station "Versailles - Rive Gauche", which is very near the palace, to "Gare d'Austerlitz" (Attention! In Versailles there's also a station called "Versailles-Rive Droite"). You can buy the ticket at the station at a manned Window or at a ticket vending machine ("Billeterie Ile-de-France"). As far as I know, only RER C trains leave the station "Versailles-Rive Gauche" and all of these trains run to Gare d'Austerlitz, so there's no chance to take the wrong train.
