Gar du Nord floor plan

Postby Bath Uni Thomas on Tue Oct 14, 2008 11:08 am

Hi

I am a masters student studying Architecture at the University of Bath,

I am looking for a basic floor plan of the station - similar to those maps that are hung in the station with 'you are here' I have searched the internet but cannot find anything.

The subject of my disseration is observing the route people have through public buildings, i would wish to use a basic map to illustrate these routes.

Many thanks for any help.

Thomas

Hi Thomas,

Unfortunately a complete floor plan for Gare du Nord isn't available for download from RATP nor SNCF. The only station map I've ever found was that of Gare de Lyon, which is quite detailed.

I might be able to snap some pictures of the station maps located at Gare du Nord itself the next time I'm there. I'll let you know when I get them.

Hi Ben,

Thanks very much, Afraid i did not think to photo those signs when i passed through last, i am really surprised maps are not available.

Another avenue for my study is the modern glass extension to the right of the main building desinged by Hirtoff, again the railways do not seem to post any information about the history and the refurbishments of their buildings!

Many thanks for your time and help

Hi Thomas,

I too am surprised there is so little information about the stations themselves available to the public, considering the amount of traffic these buildings get.

I think the various public transportation bodies in France (and there are many) are attempting to consolidate their information. Gares-en-Mouvement.com is a start. Of all the major Paris stations, only one, Gare Montparnasse has a floor plan available on that site.

The curious thing is that all of these maps exist already, in electronic format. The maps within the stations themselves are PDF's, as the Gare de Lyon PDF floor map is available. It is exactly the same as those maps within the station.

Why they don't make these available to the public on a wide scale... is anyone's guess.

Hi again,

I found a simple Gare du Nord floor plan for the western side of the station, where the main train lines are. See the Gare du Nord photo tour again and scroll to the bottom. This simple map doesn't contain a lot of detail and only shows the main level, neither the Eurostar upper level, nor the below street level floors. But, it still might be useful for you.

Cheers,

Ben

That is brilliant, Thankyou very much, Was it there or have you hosted it there - i dont remember seeing it,

I will draw my own map from that anyway so it does not matter.

Many thanks for your help
