Train Tickets - How to Plan

Postby vikaro1 on Sun Jan 18, 2009 5:13 pm

Hello,

I'm planning to be in Paris from 23rd Jan till 26th Jan alongwith my wife and 2 yr. kid. I plan to live in hotel near Eiffel Tower and will be landing in CDG. I also plan to visit EuroDisney. Also, i'm planning for a hop-on hop-off city tour since i have a kid, so would prefer the least walking. Pls. suggest the cheapest way to plan my travel on trains in Paris.

Hi Vikaro,

Since you are landing at CDG on Thursday and are staying for 3 nights, 4 days, I would suggest buying a two Carte Paris Visite for 3 days and 6 zones (39,70€/person) + two single Billets Ile-de-France tickets for CDG-Paris (8,40€/person, which I'll explain in a moment). Your two-year-old child travels for free. The Carte Paris Visite will cover you for unlimited Metro/RER/bus trips all around Paris and out to Paris Disneyland (Zone 5) for 3 out of your 4 days.

Since you're staying 4 days and the Carte Paris Visite will only be valid for 3 days, you'll need a pair of one way billets Ile-de-France for your wife and yourself to travel between Paris and CDG Airport.

If you arrive late to Paris on your first day, I suggest you use the billets Ile-de-France for travel into Paris, saving the full day of Carte Paris Visite for your last day. Or do the opposite if you arrive early on your first day. The Carte Paris Visite starts counting days upon first use, not when you buy it. Thus, you can buy it one day and start using it another without losing that day of included travel.

I hope this helps and have a great trip.

Best regards,

Ben

Hi Ben,

Thanks for the response. Before your response, What i was planning is to have a carnet and single tickets for CDG-Paris. Paris-Disneyland,Disneyland-Paris, Paris-CDG. Actually these are the only travel i'll be doing out of central Paris. Within central paris, i plan to go to take hop-on hop-off tour and go to Haussman shopping, Marrais, La Chapelle. How does this sound.

Although I agree with you on the most hassle-free ticket options with the kid, but i'm not planning to use trains a lot apart from what i mentioned.

Also, how friendly a train system and access with the baby stroller.

Hi Vikaro,

Thanks for the further clarification on your travel plans.

If you plan to use the Metro only sparingly while in Paris, your suggestion of using carnets of Ticket t+ plus billets Ile-de-France for travel outside of central Paris, makes more sense.

Baby strollers are well accepted on all forms of Paris transit: RER trains, Metro lines, bus and trams. Generally, many Metro lines use train cars that are somewhat old and not very spacious in terms of accepting strollers, but they all do. The best Metro lines in terms of space would be Metro 1 and Metro 14.

The majority of Metro station entrances will not have elevator access, thus you'll have to use either the stairs or escalators to move about with the stroller. Strangers often help those with strollers to navigate stairs and to mount/dismount RER trains (which are often a few steps above the train platform).

Best regards,

Ben
