Very confused about fare zones, RER, Metro and Navigo Dec.

Hi Ben,

Please help! I'm very confused about the fare zones, RER, Metro and the Navigo Decouverte pass. I understand the RER's different fare zones, but I could not find any information about fare zones for the metro, if it exists.

My schedule is such that I need to take RER-A to Cergy once a week. My closest Metro station is Villejuif-LouisAragon, and I plan to visit every inch of Zones 1 and 2 on other days of the week. I'm here for 2.5 months.

I thinking I should buy tickets for RER-A only when I need them (2 per week) and I'd like to get the Navigo Decouverte for unlimited travel in Zones 1-2 for the month. However, because I live in Villejuif, do I need to buy the Zones 1-6 Navigo Dec. pass, or can I get away with just Zones 1-2?

Thanks in advance for your help!

The Metro itself is not subject to zones: it is all one zone. For complete coverage of the Metro (including Villejuif-Louis Aragon), all you need is a Navigo Découverte with 1-2 zones (the minimum available).

I would recommend buying carnets of Billet Ile-de-France tickets for your bi-weekly trips out to Cergy on RER A. You will get a small discount for buying these tickets in books of ten as opposed to individually.

Let me know if you have further questions!
