Allowed Public or Street Level Transfers – Paris Metro / RER / Train / Express Tram

By | July 16, 2024 | in Maps Metro RER Tickets

Normally Paris Metro/RER/Train transfers require the two train lines to be connected inside a shared station, usually underground. Below is a list of exceptionally allowed street-level/public-area transfers made outside of a station between Paris Metro and RER, Express Tram and Transilien train, using a single, origin-destination ticket or fare that covers the traveled Paris fare zones.

Street Level Transfers sometimes shown on Metro 14 line map

Transfers that require street/public area access are sometimes shown on Metro/RER/Train line maps with a person walking at those stations (see above image).  This walking person doesn’t mean the transfer is included in your ticket as a free transfer.  The walking person icon only indicates you need to exit the station to street-level or public access walkway to make the transfer.  Only the transfers listed below are the street-level sidewalk/public access transfers that may be done on a ticket covering both lines.

In the example line map above, which is the northern end of Metro line 14, a person traveling on Metro 14 can transfer at Saint-Denis Pleyel between Metro 14 and Metro 13 and RER D using a public access area/street, but this is not included in a single ticket’s included transfers (because it’s not in the list below).  For example, using the Orly Airport Ticket on Metro 14, the transfer from Metro 14 to RER D at Saint-Denis Pleyel would not be included/covered since it exits the Metro 14 station to street level and re-enters the RER D station and is not listed below in the Allowed Public Street-Level transfers.  To make a permitted/included transfer from Metro 14 to RER D using an Orly Airport Ticket you could make the transfer at Metro 14’s Chatelet station which directly connects to RER D station “Chatelet les Halles” without needing to exit underground fare-paid areas.

The 2nd transfer highlighted with an arrow on the Metro 14 line map shown above, at Pont Cardinet, must be done on a publicly accessible walkway and is included in a single ticket’s transfer, because it is listed in the “Allowed Street Level Transfers” list below.  So a traveler using a properly ticketed Billet Origin-Destination (a ticket which specifies the starting station and ending station say Chatelet station on Metro 14 to Versailles Rive Droite on Transilien L, or the Orly Airport Ticket / CDG Airport Ticket) will be able to exit Metro 14 at Pont Cardinet, walk over to Pont Cardinet Transilien L line station, use the same “billet/ticket” to open turnstiles/gates at Pont Cardinet station, and board/ride the Transilien L line to their ticketed destination.
