In 2025 the basic Paris public train transport ticket is the Paris Metro-Train-RER ticket (Ticket Métro-Train-RER), for both Paris Metro and Paris RER trains.
This newly combined Paris Metro & RER ticket costs 2.50€. This ticket is good for all Paris Metro lines and Paris RER lines in all of Paris’ 5 fare zones, but not every station! Paris Orly Airport Station on Metro 14 and Paris CDG 1 & CDG 2 RER stations are two notable exceptions not valid with this new 2025 Paris Metro/RER Ticket! See below for what’s included, how to buy and how to use the new Paris Metro-Train-RER Ticket…

How do I buy the Paris Metro-Train-RER ticket?
The Paris Metro-Train-RER ticket can be purchased on your mobile phone via an official Paris transport smartphone app (instructions in link), within Apple Wallet, or in-person at any Paris Metro station / RER station / Transilien station ticket window.
When buying the Metro-Train-RER ticket in-person, you will need to also buy a Navigo Easy card (2€) to store the ticket (if you don’t already have one).
You can buy & store anywhere from a single paris Metro-Train-RER ticket up to 20 tickets on a Navigo Easy card, or smartphone app, or Apple Wallet. These single-ride fares do not expire and can be used at any time in the future. (Note that Navigo Easy cards expire after ten years of initial purchase.)
When buying in-person, Paris train station ticket windows accept Euro cash notes, coins, French debit card and Visa/Mastercard credit cards. When purchasing Paris transport fares on your smartphone, Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and credit cards are accepted.
Important note: you cannot store both Paris Airports Ticket and Paris Metro-Train-RER tickets on the same Navigo Easy card, or smartphone app, or Apple Wallet at the same time. Only one of the tickets or the other can be loaded onto that particular card/device at the same time. When all the tickets of either type are used up on the mobile phone or Easy card and 4 hours has passed since the last ticket was validated, then the other type of ticket, Metro-Train-RER or Paris Airports Ticket, can be loaded onto that same phone or Navigo Easy card. So if you’re looking to buy & have both Paris Metro-Train-RER tickets and Paris Airports Ticket when you arrive at Paris airports CDG or Orly, you’ll need either buy two Navigo Easy cards, or have one Navigo Easy and one supported mobile phone app or Apple Wallet to buy/store the other type of ticket.
I realize this limitation sounds ridiculous, but it’s a current limitation of the ticketing system of Paris public transportation and there is no date given when this will change.
This limitation doesn’t affect multi-use passes like the Navigo Week Pass. A Navigo Week Pass and Paris Metro-Train-RER ticket can both be loaded onto the same smartphone app at the same time. The Navigo Week Pass, while active, will be used first before any Paris Metro-Train-RER tickets loaded onto the same smartphone app. Same for Navigo Day Pass and Paris Metro-Train-RER tickets loaded onto a Navigo Easy card at the same time: the Navigo Day Pass, while active, will be used first before any Metro-Train-RER tickets.
A Navigo Découverte card cannot be loaded with Paris Metro-Train-RER tickets. Navigo Decouverte can only hold Navigo Day Pass, Navigo Week Pass and Navigo Month Pass. No single-use tickets or fares can be loaded onto a Navigo Découverte card.
How to Use Paris Metro-RER-Train Ticket
The Paris Metro-Train-RER Ticket is a contactless fare put on a Navigo Easy card, or smartphone app, or Apple Wallet.
After loading the ticket onto your card or phone, you tap & hold your Navigo Easy or phone against the card readers at fare gates to validate your ticket, you hear a “ding” and the barriers open / turnstiles unlock allowing you to pass through. This is the same whether you loaded your ticket onto a Navigo Easy card, your smartphone app or your Apple Wallet: you’ll tap to validate & open gates. The same with exiting an RER or Transilien station so it’s important to keep your Navigo Easy card/mobile device handy for exiting your destination station. (Paris Metro station exit gates don’t need to validate fares for exiting as the gates are pressure or motion sensitive. You must keep your validated fare until exit though in case you are controlled by train staff for ticket verification.) If there are fare gates/turnstiles at your destination (for example, at all RER stations inside central Paris), you’ll need to tap your Metro-RER-Train Ticket to unlock/open the fare gate to exit the station.
Each rider must have their own Navigo Easy (2€) or Paris Transport mobile app, or Apple Wallet to use the Paris Metro-Train-RER Ticket. Multiple people cannot use the same Navigo Easy card or smartphone for the Metro-Train-RER Ticket at the same time. If you are traveling with children, you will need to buy them the Paris Metro-Train-RER Ticket on their own Navigo Easy card, or their own smartphone if they have one.
Why should I use the Paris Metro-Train-RER ticket?
When deciding whether you should buy single-ride tickets like the Paris Metro-Train-RER ticket or whether you should buy a multi-use pass like Navigo Week Pass, it can depend on when you arrive, distance/frequency of trips and if you need access to CDG / Orly Airports.
Reasons to Buy Navigo Week Pass | Reasons to Buy Metro-Train-RER Tickets |
---|---|
need CDG / ORY airport access | I arrive Friday/Saturday/Sunday |
arrive Monday/Tue/Wed/Thur | I arrive by train into city |
I use buses | I take only Metro, RER, Transilien |
I use trams | I make 2 or less trips per day |
dislike counting tickets | I don’t use/transfer to buses / trams |
I make make many stops / many short rides |
