Can I take a train from Gare de Lyon to Charter, how long does it take and how much does it cost? Should I buy tickets in advance?

Chartres trains depart from Gare Montparnasse so you would need to transfer from Gare de Lyon to Gare Montparnasse first. Metro 6 goes from Bercy to Montparnasse Bienvenue, so that is one option for the initial transfer inside Paris. Then it would be a TER brand train from Montparnasse to Chartres.
The Paris Metro ride is 2.15€ and Montparnasse to Chartres is 19.60€ on TER as of 2024. TER is not reserved seating so you don't need to book in advance and can buy the day of travel, but you can buy ahead of time if you like.
