Hi, we are visiting Paris for four days, Friday - Monday next week. We are staying in zone 5. Is it cheaper to get a Paris Pass covering zones 1-3 and pay the extra to go to and from zone 5, or would that be daft?

It would be best to buy the 1-5 zone Paris Visite in that case. The extension ticket is only applicable to Navigo users needing to travel outside of their purchased zones, rather than the tourist passes such as Paris Visite.
Since you're staying in zone 5 & returning nightly you would get your money's worth out of a multi-day pass.
