We are staying in St Germain-des-Pres for the week of Aug 21. We are planning to visit Versailles on Aug 23. Would you recommend taking a metro to Javel and then taking RER C line from there ? Or is there a better option ? Thank you

Yes, you're correct, a Metro (line 10) from Saint Germain des Prés (Mabillon station, in direction of Boulogne Pont de Saint-Cloud) to Javel - André Citroën station then transferring to RER C direction Versailles Rive Gauche, will be your best option to get from Paris to Versailles by train because of the rail works on RER C until August 26, 2023.
