Why didn't my Navigo Découverte not work

I purchased a weekly Passe Navigo Découverte last Sunday when I arrived at Charles de Gaulle airport.  I was in Paris for the week for work and had planned on using the pass to get to and from work Monday to Friday.  As it turns out, I could walk to work so didn't use the pass for travel during the week.  I was staying in Paris for the weekend to go sightseeing and went to use the Navigo Decouverte this morning (Saturday) but it would not work.  The woman at the ticket desk did not speak English but she pointed at today's date and kept repeating "validate".  I then had to purchase a single ticket.  
Do you know why the Navigo Decouverte did not work?  I paid €28 (approx) for the pass + card.  Have I lost the value of the ticket?  Any help much appreciated.

I can't explain why it didn't work.  At times the card's storage can become corrupted.  If you bring the receipt to a ticket counter and present the pass telling them it doesn't work, they can verify and correct the pass for the current week, but the value is only good till Sunday end of service.
