We are visiting Paris later this month and will need passes for zones 1-3. Do we have to await arrival at Gare du Nord to buy, or can they be purchased online?

Yes you can buy Paris transit tickets online from the Paris Convention & Visitor bureau. That linked page has information on delivery costs for single-use Metro tickets, but the shipping costs will be similar for Paris Visite tickets.
